In the informally developed neighbourhoods of Sao Paulo houses don't appear. They grow. From reused building materials to brick and concrete and from one floor to two or more. Simlarly architecture isn't created but gradually growing. Particularly interesting is the way how the veranda is used as a key element towards vernacular architecture and status. The growth of the veranda seems to have stages.
Stage 1: build yourself a veranda (requires a 2nd floor) to watch over your street and to be seen while watching. Use simple hollow bricks.
Stage 2: paint or tile your facade.
Stage 3: replace your standard hollow brick balustrade by ornamented balusters. They should preferably be Greek style or Greek-ish.
Food for thought: Could growing architecture be a design tool?
